sophie

Origin, Meaning, And History Of Sophie

Sophie derived from the Greek word “Sophos,” meaning “wisdom.” It is also the French version of the popular name Sophia. This feminine name has been in use since the 4th century and is a popular choice for baby girls even today.

Besides the name signifying wisdom, a revered martyr saint named Sophia also added to the allure of the name. This perhaps made the name popular among royalty in Europe. So you have Princess Sophie of Greece and Denmark and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, amongst a plethora of princesses and queens with the name Sophia.

It is also believed that the name was popularized in England by the German House of Hanover in the 18th century, possibly due to Princess Sophia of the Palatinate, who married Elector Ernest Augustus to become Electress of Hanover.

There are many variations of Sophia. The Polish variant of Sophie is Zofie, Sofie and Sophy in German, Dutch/Flemish, English and Scandinavian, and Sofieke in Dutch.

The phrase “Sofie’s choice,” which means choosing from two equally bad choices, points to the name’s popularity among the common masses. William Styron’s 1979 book titled “Sofie’s Choice,” which was later made into a film, also added to the popularity of the name.

Sophie is the name of one of the central characters of Nickelodeon series Genie in the House. The older sister, Sophie Norton, loves science and learning different languages. In literature, the name Sophie appears in the 1991 novel Sophie’s World by Norwegian writer Jostein Gaarder, with the main character Sophie Amundsen. In the bestselling book The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown, Sophie Neveu is the name of the cryptologist helping the protagonist Robert Langdon. Sophie remained a popular choice among parents who wanted a short and adorable name for their children and is still appealing to millennial parents.
